Urine infection came back..

Darn it! Dylan’s urine infection came back.

When I picked him up on Tues night from the bedroom downstairs, his body felt very warm. I checked his temperature when I took him to our bedroom and the temp was 38.2C. Gosh, hubb was brushing Bryan’s teeth at that time, so I thought i will bf him for a while until hubb is back before deciding to call the PD. But his temp went down to normal ~37C when hubb got back and stayed around that level the whole night.

Next morning, temp still normal. But in the late morning, while he was having his nap, the temp went up to 37.9C. Temp went down again after 10mins or so of bfg I called the PD and his nurse picked up the call. I spoke to the nurse and she said the condition does not sound normal. She suggested that I continue to monitor or if I am worried, bring him in for a check up.

I decided to take Dylan in to check.

Luckily we did. I had switched PD to Dr Sim, Bryan’s regular PD. Easier to let both boys have the same PD. My parents and hubb all wanted Dr Sim as our experience with him had been pretty good so far.

Dylan’s temp was 37.2C at Dr Sim’s clinic and he did a thorough physical examination on Dylan. Everything is normal. But he suggested a urine test.

The test came back positive on bacteria. Sheesh la….

Dr Sim said that it was probably because he was not treated properly the first time and the bacteria did not die 100%. Dylan was prescribed oral antibiotics the first time.

He said that for newborns, it is more effective if they were given antibiotics via injection. That is the only way to make sure that the right dosage of antibiotics was delivered each time. With oral feeding, babies can spits them out during or after feeding.

I asked him how come the bacteria can come back when urine test came out clean in the end.

He explained that as the test was taken when antibiotics is still been administered there could still be a very low level of bacteria presence in the system and these were killed by the antibiotics when the urine is passed out or it was low enough not to be detected by the test. (something like that, as I cannot recall his exact explanations)

So what we have been doing is taking Dylan to Dr Sim for daily injection of antibiotics. Last dose is tomorrow. Then we will have to bring him in for a urine test 1 week later. To check if the bacteria comes back once he is taken off the antibiotics.

But we will still need to keep Dylan on the preventive antibiotics to prevent new bacteria from attacking his systems.

Sigh… really sian with all these frequent visits to the doctor. But I am glad that we detected this one early too. It is really true, you can never be too careful when taking care of a newborn. Always seek medical advice if they do not seem well.

Did the PD suggest him to do a MCU? I know it is a worry but I hope he recover soon. Email me if you need more info. My gal went thru the same thing.
